Abstract

We will perform systematic first-principles calculations of spin-orbit coupling and exchange proximity effects in a variety of multilayer magnetic van der Waals structures. Our focus will be on the electronic band structure properties and effective spin Hamiltonian modeling for heterostructures containing graphene, 2D magnets, and layered topological insulators. Effects of twisting, gating, and doping will be of particular interest to provide efficient control over the investigated properties. We also plan to investigate fundamental magnetic properties of 2D ferromagnets in van der Waals heterostructures and effective interlayer exchange coupling in the presence of nonmagnetic space layers.

We employ density functional methods, multi-orbital tight-binding modeling, and symmetry based effective Hamiltonians to describe the electronic states of 2D heterostructures. For the modeling we also extract desired tight-binding parameters using symmetrized wannierization.
